The Rise of Acne: Does it occur overnight?

Contrary to popular belief that pimple develops rapidly overnight, the process usually takes about 1 - 2 weeks. The formation of Acne can be subdivided into 3 steps as illustrated in the image below.
The formation of Acne
Step 1: The sebaceous gland starts to produce more sebum during puberty stage.
Step 2: This increase in sebum production clogs the pore opening, causing retention of sebum and dead skin cells under the skin. As a result, comedones such as whiteheads and blackheads start to form on the skin.
Step 3: The clogged pore provides an excellent environment for the bacterium Propionibacterium Acnes (P.Acnes) to grow rapidly. P.Acnes are the bacteria that is responsible for the skin inflammation caused by Acne. This is when red bumps start to appear on the skin's surface.
The type of Acne will depend on the degree of inflammation. For example, deep and intense inflammation may lead to the formation of large inflamed pimples known as nodules (large painful bumps) and cysts (large pus-filled pimples). It is recommended to seek medical advice in order to minimise scarring.
Aside from internal factors such as genetics and hormones, external factors such as climate conditions, lifestyle habits and cosmetics may also play a role in the formation of Acne.
